![]() Residency unveil PDL scheduleJanuary 24, 2008VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC, in conjunction with the United Soccer Leagues (USL), announced today the 2008 USL Premier Development League (PDL) regular season schedule. The Whitecaps Residency team will kick off their inaugural year at Simon Fraser University against the Abbotsford Mariners on Sunday, May 18, and wrap up the regular season away to Utah-based side, Ogden Outlaws on Saturday, July 19.The Whitecaps will play in the eight-team Western Conference Northwest Division and will face the Mariners four times and the remaining sides twice for a total of 16 regular season games. In addition to the Mariners and Outlaws, the Residency team will battle Washington State’s Tacoma Tide, Yakima Reds and Spokane Spiders, as well as Oregon’s Cascade Surge, who play out of Salem. Utah’s Brigham Young University Cougars are also part of the Northwest Division. The top two teams in the Northwest and Southwest Divisions advance to the Western Conference championship tournament. The division champions face the second place team from the opposite division in the conference semifinals. The winner of the Conference championship advances to the PDL semifinals. The four Conference championship tournaments will be held July 25 to 27, with the PDL semifinals set for August 1 and 2. The PDL Championship finals will be held on Saturday, August 9. All playoff hosts are determined via a bid process. The Whitecaps PDL side will predominately be comprised of players from the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency program, with Residency managing director and head coach Thomas Niendorf in charge of the team from the sidelines. In addition to the full-time Residency players, members from the Whitecaps first-team squad, who play out in the USL First Division, will be eligible to be sent down to the PDL team for conditioning stints.
