5 CAPS NAMED TO TEAM OF THE WEEK

May 1, 2006 - The United Soccer Leagues unveiled their First Division Team of the Week selections today, naming Whitecaps defender Adrian Cann, forward Joey Gjertsen, midfielder Steve Klein, midfielder Alfredo Valente and goalkeeper Josh Wicks to the squad.

All five players had strong performances in Vancouver's 2-0 victory over the Toronto Lynx on Saturday night.

Wicks, 22, made three saves on eight shots to earn his second consecutive shutout of the season and ninth of his career. The 6' 3" goalkeeper's stop on Toronto's Marko Bedenikovic preserved Vancouver's 1-0 lead and prevented a change in momentum before Sita-Taty Matondo's goal in the 82nd minute put the game out of reach.

Cann, 25, played a full 90 minutes for the Whitecaps for the second consecutive game this season. The 6' 3" defender's solid play on Vancouver's defensive line is one of the main reasons why the Whitecaps have not surrendered a goal this season.

Klein, 30, has also played every minute for the Whitecaps this year. This year Klein moved to the centre back position which has been a major reason why Vancouver has opened with two shutouts.

Valente, 25, set up Vancouver's first goal of the contest with a cross to forward Joey Gjertsen. The 5'6" midfielder was one of the most dangerous players on the field throughout the first half, swinging in several crosses from the left side to create a number of scoring chances for the Whitecaps.

Gjertsen, 23, has two game winning goals in as many games for the Whitecaps this season. His blast in the 45th minute from ten yards out beat Lynx goalkeeper Theo Zagar and put the Whitecaps up 1-0. The 5'9" forward's efforts earned him his second straight UMBRO Player of the Game award.

Defender Brandon Curran (Charleston), Nevio Pizzolitto (Montreal), Omar Daley (Charleston), Marko Bedenikovic (Toronto), Gavin Glinton (Charleston), and Mauricio Salles (Montreal) were also named to the Team of the Week.

Charleston's Gavin Glinton was named Player of the Week for his two-goal performance against the Virginia Beach Mariners.
