Overview:
The Whitecaps lost 1-0 away to the Charleston Battery, to end a tough three-game road-trip all even at 1-1-1. It was Vancouver's second game in as many nights, and third in four days.
After a quiet first half, the Battery scored in the 54th minute as striker Gavin Glinton put in his own rebound, taking advantage of the only good scoring chance for either side to that point. Whitecaps coach Bob Lilley made three substitutions at the hour mark which sparked the Whitecaps to life. But despite numerous chances to score, including two breakaways, a shot off the crossbar, and another cleared off the line, Vancouver couldn't score past veteran goalkeeper Dusty Hudock. Vancouver out-shot their hosts 11-7 overall.
Vancouver's record falls to 4W-2L-7T, for 19 points as they slip to third place in the USL First Division standings behind Rochester and Portland, who tied Montreal 0-0 Sunday afternoon. Charleston improve to 4-3-3 for 15 points.
The Whitecaps now return home for a game Sunday, June 25 against the Puerto Rico Islanders starting at 7:00 p.m., preceded at 4:00 p.m. by the Whitecaps Women against the Fort Collins Force in a Swangard Stadium doubleheader.
Scoring Summary:
54' - Charleston - Gavin Glinton
Glinton's first shot was parried by goalkeeper Josh Wicks, but Glinton got the rebound and fired it in.
Game Notes:
The host team had the best chances of a tightly played first half as Ugo Okoye fired wide from distance at 2', Lazo Alavanja did the same at 33', while former Whitecap Ian Fuller blasted one over the bar at 40'.
Vancouver's best chance of the first half was a shot by rookie forward Stefan Leslie that went wide at 24'.
After the break, Leslie fired over the bar at 52'. Charleston scored just two minutes later.
A 62', Joey Gjertsen, David Morris, and Jay Alberts all subbed into the game, and it had an immediate impact for the Whitecaps. Seconds after coming on, and with his first touch of the game, Gjertsen went in alone on goal on the feed from David Testo, but goalkeeper Dusty Hudock made the save. The Whitecaps were buzzing from that point and at 64' Diaz Kambere on the left got past his marker and fired a bullet forcing Hudock into a brilliant save to push over the bar. From the ensuing corner kick, Steve Klein hit the crossbar with a shot, and then Jay Alberts fired the rebound straight at the keeper. Dave Morris broke in alone on goal at 80', but was stopped by Hudock, and then at 90' another Morris effort was cleared off the line. The final chance fell to Adrian Cann in injury time, but his header from a corner kick went over the bar.
Rookie fullback Diaz Kambere, a graduate of the Whitecaps Reserve Team, got his first start for the club.
The loss snapped the Whitecaps' five-game undefeated streak.
Midfielder Martin Nash has played 49 consecutive games, spanning three seasons.
Defender Steve Klein has played every minute, 1170, for Vancouver this season.
