CAPS WOMEN DRAW IN COLORADO
June 30, 2007 - Real Colorado Cougars - 1
Vancouver Whitecaps – 1
Shea Stadium, Denver, CO
Vancouver Whitecaps FC women closed out an exhausting four-game Colorado road trip in Denver, with a 1-1 draw against Real Colorado Cougars; a team Vancouver had defeated 3-1 last Monday. The result ended the Whitecaps four-game win streak, but continued Vancouver's run of never having lost in the state of Colorado, with a record now of 19-0-3 dating back to 2001.
Vancouver completely dominated the first hour of the game but despite chance after chance they had to settle for a modest 1-0 lead. Jodi-Ann Robinson fired in a hard low shot from the top of the box in minute 24 on a feed from Ella Masar. Before that forward Tiffeny Milbrett was twice denied a goal. Milbrett’s corner kick was cleared off the line by a defender in the eighth minute, and then was stopped on a 20th minute breakaway by a superb save from the keeper who pushed the ball wide of the post. Striking partner Masar also had a breakaway just after the hour mark, but pulled her shot wide.
The Whitecaps began to run out of steam as the game wore on, allowing the Cougars to snatch an equalizer with ten minutes remaining. Substitute Taryn Hemmings got in behind the defence after a poor clearance, and beat goalkeeper Cori Alexander. Vancouver ended the game having enjoyed an 11-1 edge in corner kicks.
The 1-1 result was perhaps predictable given the previous scores on the road trip. Vancouver opened the trip with a 4-1 win, followed by a 3-1 win, then 2-1.
The single point is enough to give the Whitecaps sole possession of first place in the Western Conference, a point up on San Diego Sunwaves and with a game in hand. The Whitecaps are 5-1-2 for 17 points, while Colorado go to 2-4-2 for eight points, leaving them fifth in the West.
The Whitecaps now return home to play Mile High Edge on Sunday, July 8 at Chilliwack's Exhibition Field. Kick-off is at 4:00 p.m.
Scoring Summary:
24' Vancouver 1-0 Jodi-Ann Robinson (Ella Masar)
Masar at the top of the box did well to lay the ball off for Robinson who cracked a low left-footer, for her third goal of the season.
80' Colorado 1-1 Taryn Hemmings (Amy Baumann)
A free kick into the box was only partially cleared by Vancouver’s defence, allowing Baumann to poke it ahead to Hemmings in space to score.
