CAPS WOMEN DRAW IN CHILLIWACK
July 8, 2007 - Vancouver Whitecaps 2
Mile High Edge 2
Exhibition Stadium - Chilliwack, BC (attendance: 1,550)
Vancouver Whitecaps women scored in the game's first minute and in the game's final minute to record a dramatic 2-2 draw with Mile High Edge in a special home game played in Chilliwack on Sunday.
Substitute Kaylyn Kyle headed in the equalizer from a corner kick in the fourth minute of injury time to extend Vancouver's home undefeated streak to 33 games.
The Whitecaps wasted no time getting started, as less than a minute into the game, Tiffeny Milbrett collected a pass from Jodi-Ann Robinson and fired it home to give Vancouver the early lead.
But while Vancouver enjoyed an edge in play, the visitors were not over-awed, and threatened in the eighteenth minute when defender Ashlie Mihalcin broke in on goal and fired a quick shot, which clipped goalkeeper Cori Alexander and was cleared from in front of goal by the Vancouver defence. From that ensuing clearance, Holly Gault had a shot in a scramble blocked on the line by a Mile High defender.
The visitors pulled level with ten minutes to go in the half, as Mallory Miller turned well in the box and fired home. Milbrett nearly restored the lead just before halftime, as she showed great hustle to chase down a bouncing ball and get goal-side of the last defender, but she could not beat Mile High goalkeeper Theresa Bagby with her shot.
Vancouver started strongly in the second half, but couldn't put away their chances. Sophie Schmidt had a couple of good early shots, but in the 56th minute, Jodi-Ann Robinson tested Bagby with a powerful shot from the edge of the area that was stopped with difficulty. A few minutes later, Ella Masar was sent in on goal, but Bagby was off her line quickly to block the striker's shot.
Suddenly, Mile High went on the attack and twice in a minute, found acres of space behind the Whitecaps defence. A ball into the box to Miller was laid off to Elisa Berzins and she cracked a ten-yard shot off the underside of the crossbar, but the ball bounced down and stayed out. Seconds later, Mihalcin pumped a long ball into the box to an unmarked Ymara Guante, and she brought the ball down and tucked it past Alexander to give the Edge a 2-1 lead.
Vancouver pushed forward in the closing stages, with Tiffeny Milbrett and Selenia Iacchelli both getting headers on goal in the last few minutes, but Bagby was there both times to make the save. Four minutes of injury time ticked away, with it finally coming down to a Milbrett corner kick with just seconds remaining. Her perfect set-piece came down amid a sea of white shirts, and it was Kyle who got her head on it and directed the ball into the open side.
The draw puts Vancouver's record at 5W-1L-3T for 18 points, as the Whitecaps remain first overall in the W-League Western Conference. Mile High sit at 2-6-2 for eight points, and remain last in the standings.
Birarda’s side now prepare for a big Western Conference clash when they visit San Diego Sunwaves in southern California on Wednesday evening. The Whitecaps next home game is Saturday, July 14, and back at Swangard Stadium against Seattle Crossfire Sounders in a 4:00pm start to kick off a double-header. The men follow at 7:00pm against Miami FC.
Scoring Summary
1' Vancouver 1-0 Tiffeny Milbrett (Jodi-Ann Robinson)
Robinson at the left edge of the box swung in a cross to Milbrett, who controlled the ball then fired it in for her ninth goal of the season.
36' Mile High 1-1 Mallory Miller (Kira Sharp)
Sharp played the ball ahead to Miller just inside the box, and she did well to turn under the challenge of her marker, and fired her shot low past Cori Alexander.
69' Mile High 1-2 Ymara Guante (Ashlie Mihalcin)
A long ball into the box fell to an unmarked Guante in front of goal and she flicked it past Alexander.
90'+ Vancouver 2-2 Kaylyn Kyle (Tiffeny Milbrett)
Milbrett's corner kick from the right was headed in by Kyle, beating the keeper and a defender on the line at the right post. It was the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native’s first goal as a Whitecaps player.
