USL FIRST DIVISION WEEKEND ROUND-UP

July 9, 2007 - Portland Timbers remain upwardly mobile in the USL First Division standings after another away win at California Victory.

The Oregon-based club made it two wins out of two in just over a week at San Francisco’s Kezar Stadium, as they continue to close the gap on the USL-1 frontrunners.

After a set of midweek games to celebrate Independence Day in the US, the weekend action started Friday night in Upstate New York, as Rochester Raging Rhinos ended a six-game home stand with a 2-1 victory over Carolina RailHawks.

Saturday saw USL-1 leaders Vancouver Whitecaps end their five-game road trip with a 2-0 defeat at a resurgent Atlanta Silverbacks. The other Saturday games saw Charleston Battery and Puerto Rico Islanders play out a goalless draw at Blackbaud Stadium in South Carolina, while Portland scored three goals in the first 20 minutes to defeat California 3-0.

The lone game on Sunday took place in Sherbrooke, Quebec, as Montreal Impact played a second straight league match away from their Claude Robillard Sports Complex home. After losing 2-0 to California in Quebec City a week ago, Nick De Santis’ side came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Carolina at Sherbrooke University Stadium.
