MARCINA MAKES TEAM OF THE WEEK

July 31, 2007 - New Vancouver Whitecaps signing Alen Marcina has been named in the latest USL First Division Team of the Week.

The Surrey, BC, native arrived back in his hometown last week after being part of a four-player trade that saw Marcina and Brazilian midfielder Ze Roberto join the Whitecaps, while David Testo and Joey Gjertsen headed to Canadian rivals Montreal Impact.

Marcina, who turned 28 on Monday, started the USL-1 season with Puerto Rico Islanders before being traded to Montreal for Lars Lyssand on June 14. Following his arrival in Vancouver, Marcina came off the substitutes’ bench to score the Whitecaps second goal in last Friday’s 2-2 draw with arch-rivals Seattle Sounders.

The newcomer is joined in the attack by Rochester Raging Rhinos striker Hamed Diallo and California Victory forward Yuri Morales. A three-man midfield consisting of Seattle’s Kenji Treschuk and the Miami FC pair of Zinho and Sean Cameron were also included in the weekly all-star XI.

Puerto Rico Islanders defender Jay Needham is the USL-1 Player of the Week after scoring his side’s winning goal against California in San Francisco on the weekend. Needham is joined in the Team of the Week’s backline by Miami’s Chris Williams, Portland Timbers’ Justin Thompson, and Atlanta Silverbacks’ David Hayes.
