CAPS PAIR MAKE TEAM OF THE WEEK
August 7, 2007 - Vancouver Whitecaps defender Geordie Lyall and midfielder Alfredo Valente have been named in the latest USL-1 Team of the Week.
Both players made the weekly all-star XI after their performances in last Thursday’s 1-1 home draw with Puerto Rico Islanders.
Lyall was a strong presence in a makeshift Whitecaps backline, with Bob Lilley’s side having been without the injured pair of Adrian Cann and Steve Klein for the game with Colin Clarke’s Islanders. Valente, meanwhile, came off the substitutes’ bench to earn Vancouver a point with his first goal of the season late in Thursday’s game.
Lyall and Valente were joined in the selected XI by Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Chris Eylander, who received a nod after recording two clean sheets in his club’s two home wins last week. Atlanta Silverbacks’ David Hayes and Montreal Impact’s Mauricio Vincello were the other defenders to be selected.
Minnesota Thunder’s Brian Farber, Seattle’s Josh Gardner, and Portland Timbers’ Lawrence Olum joined Valente as the other midfielders to be selected in the team, while Carolina RailHawks’ Connally Edozien and newcomer Andre Toussaint from Charleston Battery were two of three forwards to make the side.
Former Whitecaps striker Joey Gjertsen was the third forward selected, having also claimed the USL-1 Player of the Week award after recording three assists in two wins for his new club Montreal last week.
