Something Old, Something New

So I'm getting married.  I realize that isn't the most eloquent introduction to a blog, but I think any male that reads this will recognize that phrase all too well.  It seems to be the de facto phrase that men use to bring up the topic to their other male friends.  Somehow, as if ingrained in my DNA, I just started bringing it up like that.  I certainly wasn't going to lead in with a 'guess whaaaaaaaatttt?' like women do.  So...I'm getting married.

But what I am learning is that I think I'd have more success planning a lunar landing than this midsummer day of joy and splendor.  The date, the location, the wedding party, the honeymoon, the clothing, the food, the cake... I mean it goes on and on.  I realize this is a major moment in my life, so I concede that all of these details are important.  But come on, I'm a guy.  I care only about the people, as in the woman I'm marrying and the people there to enjoy it.  Evidently this is not the best attitude to have when asked for my opinion as I've learned there is a big difference between 'I don't care' and 'whatever you think'.  I suppose if the devil is in the details, well the angry fiance is also in the details.

But along a parallel path, there is much planning underway at the Whitecaps.  Our organization is growing at a pretty fast clip and there always seems to be more than enough things going on at once.  For example, our residency program is off to a successful start, having been across the globe.  Development camps for ages U6 - U13 will kick off during spring break and then through the summer.  And the sales team are working hard with season ticket renewals and bringing new fans on board (spreading the Whitecaps gospel, as I like to call it).

Of course, there is a lot going on with the men's team as well.  A new head coach always brings renewed optimism and interest, and I know I am quite intrigued to see what he brings to the club.  Players are stopping by the office for meetings and there are whispers almost daily about who is re-signing and who we are in talks with.  Discussions about our international friendly opponent (as well as a few other key matchups) is ramping up and I can't wait until we finalize everything and make an announcement.  Even our website will be adding some cool new features in the coming weeks.

So needless to say, there is a lot of planning buzz going on around me and it's exciting to be in the midst of it.  But if anyone told me previously that planning a wedding would be more difficult than planning a men's, women's and youth season at the Whitecaps, I would have thought they were fooling themselves.

Something tells me this is the first of many lessons I will learn on my way to marriage!
