Germans send clear message in ChinaSeptember 10, 2007 6:00 PM Germany v Argentina is usually considered a major international soccer showdown…at least in the men’s game. A clash between the two nations’ respective women’s teams on Monday, September 10, proved anything but. Argentina’s women simply could not live with the World and European champions, as Germany routed the South Americans 11-0. Though it was only the first game of the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China, the Germans sent a clear message to their rivals that they have no intention of letting their World crown slip from their grasp. The growth of women’s soccer has brought some anticipation that this World Cup might display more parity amongst the 16 competing nations. That may still be the case, but at the same time, fans may need to prepare for further lopsided results as seen in Shanghai on Monday. In typical German style, fine flank play and crossing tore Argentina’s defence to shreds and underlined the kind of ruthlessness and efficiency that has been seen from German soccer sides in the past. Though Monday’s result may not cause that much fear, it is sure to leave enough of an imprint with teams that feel they are just as equipped as Germany to become world champions. For me, one thing is certain. Whoever does win this World Cup will have to go through Germany at some stage.
