I'm sitting in front of my laptop and counting down the hours until I'm on a big plane, headed for a new adventure. I'm off to Europe for 6 weeks and I'll be making my way through Greece, Turkey and Hungary - but first a stop in Paris for a few days. Although I plan to spend an exorbitant amount of time laying on a beach and doing nothing, I also want to sneak in a couple football matches. And I'm intrigued to learn a little more about how central the sport is to these people's daily life. I bought a book for the trip entitled 'Soccer Against the Enemy: How the World's Most Popular Sport Starts and Fuels Revolutions and Keeps Dictators in Power'. Hopefully, the author is a little more concise than his title would imply, but nevertheless, it sounds very interesting.
I wish the Whitecaps and all of you fans the best of luck this weekend. I wish I could be there. For those of you making the trek down to Portland, I applaud you. I know the team really gets a lift from support like that. I remember how appreciative the guys were for those of us that made our way to Rochester for the final last year. It's going to be a tough matchup, but we have the talent to beat Portland, and don't forget, we are the defending champions!
Anyway, I'll be checking the scores from Europe at every chance I get. And I'll try to make a few posts to this blog too. So good luck and go Caps!
