USL First Division Weekend Round-Up
Puerto Rico Islanders were the biggest movers in the latest weekend of games in the United Soccer Leagues First Division.
The Caribbean outfit are currently in a run of six games away from home, with Colin Clarke's side claiming three wins from four of those road games to date. Rochester Rhinos, meanwhile, took their unbeaten streak to three games after completing a three-game home stand over the weekend, while Montreal Impact's struggles in front of goal continued on Sunday afternoon.
Action started last Thursday night, as Puerto Rico built on their win in Montreal by defeating the Timbers 2-0 in Portland. Fabrice Noel and former Vancouver Whitecaps striker Josh Hansen scored the goals for the visitors at PGE Park.
There were two games on Friday, with Rochester getting an early goal from Luke Kreamalmeyer in their 1-0 win over Seattle Sounders at PAETEC Park. In Minnesota, meanwhile, a two-hour weather delay did not stop the Thunder from playing Carolina RailHawks to an entertaining 2-2 draw at the National Sports Center.
The lone game on Saturday was one of the surprising results of the weekend, as in-form Puerto Rico handed USL-1 leaders Charleston Battery only their second home defeat of the season after a 3-1 success at Blackbaud Stadium. Kendal Jagdeosingh, Cristian Arrieta (penalty), and Jonathan Steele all scored in the second half to cancel out Lazo Alavanja's first-half strike for the South Carolina hosts, as the Islanders pulled to within three points of the Battery.
The weekend action finished with three games on Sunday. Montreal's goalscoring woes at Saputo Stadium continued, as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against visiting Seattle, with Frenchman Sebastien Le Toux scoring the Sounders' winner late in the second half. Down the way in Upstate New York, Rochester and Miami FC Blues played to a goalless draw at PAETEC Park. The final game on Sunday saw Carolina and Vancouver exchange late goals in a 1-1 draw. RailHawks striker Daniel Antoniuk and Whitecaps forward Eduardo Sebrango had the goals at Swangard Stadium.
