Portland Timbers went to the top of the United Soccer Leagues First Division standings by setting a new league record over the weekend.
The Oregon-based club's draw and win in South Florida allowed the Timbers to set a new USL-1 record for the longest, single-season unbeaten streak at 16 matches. Puerto Rico Islanders are level on points with Portland after their weekend win in Quebec, while Charleston Battery had to settle for two draws on their travels.
The action started in Upstate New York on Wednesday night, with struggling Montreal Impact holding on for a goalless draw with hosts Rochester Rhinos. Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos was sent off just before halftime for an altercation with Rhinos midfielder Tiger Fitzpatrick.
There were three matches on Friday. In Bedford, Ohio, Cleveland City Stars held Charleston to a 0-0 draw, while Portland left it late to extend their unbeaten run after they claimed a 1-1 draw at Miami FC Blues. David Hayes canceled out Orlando Bueso's opening goal for the Timbers at Florida International University Stadium. Meanwhile, in North Carolina, the Whitecaps suffered a second straight defeat on the road after falling 2-1 to the high-flying Carolina RailHawks at WakeMed Soccer Park.
Saturday saw Rochester left frustrated again at home, as Charleston earned a 1-1 draw at Marina Auto Stadium. The Battery's Randi Patterson canceled out Johnny Menyongar's opening goal for the Rhinos. Meanwhile, a first-half goal by Rod Dyachenko gave Minnesota Thunder their third win of the season, as they edged Austin Aztex 1-0 at the National Sports Center Stadium.
Sunday saw Montreal's winless streak in USL-1 extend to five matches after a 1-0 home defeat to Puerto Rico. Cristian Arrieta's penalty ensured the Impact have now lost four of their last five games in the league. Finally, second-half goals by George Josten, Keith Savage, and Antouman Jallow gave Portland a 3-0 win at Miami. The result took the Timbers to the top of the league and set their unbeaten run at 16 games.
