Whitecaps Showcase goes this weekend

Over 28 top girls teams from British Columbia and Alberta will be competing this weekend in the inaugural Whitecaps West Coast College Showcase at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, BC.

The event kicks off this Saturday at noon and runs through until Monday, with over 62 matches scheduled for the weekend.

The Showcase provides a unique opportunity for U-15 to U-18 players to demonstrate their talents to a large audience of college and university coaches and scouts. Off the field, players will gain valuable knowledge by learning about college recruitment, scholarships, as well as entrance requirements and processes. Players will receive a college bound workbook, while participating college and university coaches will receive a coach's workbook profiling every team and athlete.

On Saturday evening, the Whitecaps will host all participating teams, staff, and college/university coaches for a special presentation. Whitecaps women's team head coach Hubert Busby Jr. will open the evening followed by special presentations by some of North America's top college and university coaches. Leading the list of guest speakers is University of North Carolina assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Chris Ducar. A member of the most successful women's soccer program in NCAA Division I - including more than 19 national championship titles - Ducar has spent the last 14 years working with legendary Tar Heels head coach Anson Dorrance.

Additional speakers include mental training coach Dr. Greg Dale from Duke University, University of Notre Dame women's head coach Randy Waldrum, Santa Clara University women's associate head coach Greg Murphy, and women's head coach Graham Roxburgh of Trinity Western University.

The girls showcase takes place this weekend at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, BC, from Saturday to Monday. In 2011, the Whitecaps will launch a boys showcase weekend.
