Stage One of MLS Re-Entry Draft takes place

Whitecaps FC pass on Stage One selection

Major League Soccer held Stage One of their first-ever Re-Entry Draft on Wednesday, with only D.C. United and Columbus Crew making selections.

16 other MLS clubs, including Vancouver Whitecaps FC, opted to pass on making a player selection in this week's first round. Stage One gave clubs the chance to select players to their contract-option salary. Next Wednesday, all 18 MLS clubs will have to right to negotiate with players they select in Stage Two of the Re-Entry Draft.

The results of Stage One saw D.C. United pick up striker Joseph Ngwenya from Houston Dynamo. The Zimbabwean international will have his contract option picked up by the Washington, D.C., outfit. Wednesday's other selection saw Columbus Crew pick up defender Aaron Hohlbein, who was out of contract at Sporting Kansas City. By selecting Hohlbein, the Crew will make a Bona Fide Offer to the defender, as listed in the Re-Entry Process regulations.

Players that were not selected in Stage One will be eligible for Stage Two of the Re-Entry Draft on Wednesday, December 15, at 11 a.m. PT. A list of players available for selection in Stage Two will be released on Monday.
