WFC Daily returns! and news for Jan. 23

WHITECAPS FC IN THE NEWS

Kung Hei Fat Choi Vancouver Whitecaps FC fans! Today marks the beginning of both a new year for the Chinese Zodiac, as well as a new year of training for our men’s team with Whitecaps FC beginning their seven-week journey to MLS First Kick on March 10th.

2012 is known as the ‘Year of the Dragon’, the luckiest symbol in the Chinese Zodiac, and one player in particular who’s hoping for some good fortune is striker Etienne Barbara. The Maltese international – who was named North American Soccer League (NASL) MVP last season – is in camp with the ‘Caps aspiring to earn a contract.

Although the first of the preseason matchups is still a few weeks away, Whitecaps FC still managed to pick-up a hat-trick last week by signing new assistant head coaches Carl Robinson and Jake DeClute, as well as scoring an additional international roster spot from Colorado Rapids. Robinson previously played as a midfielder for rivals Toronto FC, twice earning the distinction of team MVP. Read what he has to say about his switch to the best coast.

The addition of Jun Marques Davidson to an already stout Whitecaps FC midfield could prove invaluable to the clubs’ depth. Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie called Davidson one of the most “technically-gifted” players he has had the pleasure of coaching. (Bruce Constantineau-The Vancouver Sun)

The documentary Rise and Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story, celebrating Whitecaps FC captain Jay DeMerit is a must see for anyone calling themselves a die-hard Whitecaps fan.  As Michael Cox explores in his story, DeMerit and his film have all the makings of a great soccer movie and an even bigger launch into super stardom for the player.
