‘Caps Chronicle: Better with age
WHITECAPS FC IN THE NEWS:
Some things just get better with age, a fine wine, a sharp cheddar, your favourite pair of jeans, Betty White, and sometimes even soccer players.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC 'keeper Joe Cannon is a prime example. The 37-year-old's experience between the sticks and leadership ability makes him an invaluable asset to the team. "Sometimes goalkeepers do become better with age," coach Martin Rennie told the Vancouver Sun. "...they learn little things about angles and positioning and decicision-making." (Bruce Constantineau - Vancouver Sun)
Another player who shows no signs of slowing down is former Whitecaps striker Eddie Sebrango, who turns 39 this year and just inked a Major League Soccer (MLS) contract with Montreal Impact yesterday. First Kick on March 10 at BC Place will be a reunion of sorts for the striker, who is the 10th all-time leading scorer for Vancouver, notching 45 goals in 95 appearances from 2006 to 2008. As one reporter explained, “He is a model professional and a fitness nut, and his self-belief kept him focused.” (Marc Weber – The Province)
Finally, a current 'Caps player that seems to just get better and better is midfield maestro Davide Chiumiento. While still only 27, the talented midfielder has been showing tremendous preseason form including his performance in the friendly against the University of Victoria Vikes last weekend which had coach Rennie declaring as the “best performance I’ve seen from him so far.” (Tyler Green – 24hrs)
