‘Caps Chronicle: Match-up with magnitude

Showdown with San Jose Earthquakes could break new ground

WHITECAPS FC IN THE NEWS:

This weekend Vancouver Whitecaps FC converge in San Jose in hopes of finding some faults with the Earthquakes backline. They’ll also be hoping their shutout streak displaces a Major League Soccer (MLS) record Saturday. In 2007, New York Red Bulls kicked off the season with four shutouts in a row, and their shutout streak of 421 minutes remains the longest to begin a season. With four shutouts to begin this season, Whitecaps FC are just 61 minutes away from a new league first.

Streaks aside ‘Caps 'keeper Joe Cannon isn’t concerned with breaking records, maintaining that the priority for the team is getting wins. While he is keen to keep the clean sheets coming he commented to one reporter that, “You can’t rest on your laurels in this league and I don’t think any of us are thinking about a streak or anything because the fact of the matter is we’re going into a hostile environment and we need to get points any way we can.” (Marc Weber – The Province)

The opponent this weekend is a familiar one for Cannon, having spent a large part of his youth, college career and professional career in San Jose. One reporter out of San Jose notes that, “Cannon, who holds Quakes' goalkeeping records for appearances, starts, minutes, saves, wins and shutouts, might even receive a warm welcome by the fans at Buck Shaw -- no small feat for a Quakes' opponent.” (Matt Schwab – San Jose Mercury News)

With midfielder Russell Teibert and Bryce Alderson back from international duty they can refocus their energy on the 'Caps, as one reporter explains, “Now the hope is the experience gained during that competition can help the pair push on at club level.” (Martin MacMahon – Sportsnet)
