What we learned vs. Real Salt Lake
On Saturday, our 'Caps players had a very tough night and found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-0 defeat and still looking for that first away win.
So what did we learn?
Transfer home form
We knew going into Real Salt Lake that it was going to be a tough game and they would have the majority of the possession because that's what they do at Rio Tinto Stadium. But this is still the same team that we played at BC Place some three weeks ago, and we outplayed them for long periods in that game.
This was a big key to getting something from the game because to be successful there, you have to have quality possession when you have the ball, and we did not do that. Too many times we gave the ball away when not under real pressure and then found ourselves chasing the ball. There is no doubt that we have the players on the team that can pass and keep the ball because we have shown that many times, especially at home. Somehow we have to take our home form and take that on the road with us.
The final ball
One of the goals of any team is trying to get into good attacking positions and then hopefully deliver a killer ball that will create a good scoring chance, or even better a goal.
When you look at Real Salt Lake's first goal, you have to say we did not defend it very well. And when Joao Plata received the ball from his goalkeeper - on a goal kick - there was still a lot to do, but he got himself into a dangerous area and delivered a pin point ball for Luis Gil to head into the net.
On the other end of the field, there were a number of times that we had the ball in and around their penalty box and the final ball was not good enough.
We need to dig deep, and find a way to win
For all the analysis all of us can do, getting a win will cure a lot of the things that are happening on the field right now.
As each game goes by without a win the confidence is going to take a hit. This team has won games and even played well in some of the earlier losses, and they know they are a good team.
But knowing you are a good team is not going to get you wins. They need to stick together and work on developing a battling mentality throughout this week and take that into the next game. It does not matter if they play well the next game or if they win ugly, as long as it’s a win.
