Carl's Keys to the Game vs. Sporting Kansas City

The legend tells us what the 'Caps need to get a 4th straight win

Brad Knighton

Brad Knighton comes up with a big save against D.C. United

Going into Sporting Park in front of a sell-out crowd, against a team that has a lot of firepower and have lost only one of their last five games shows you the task at hand.  In tough situations like this you need players to step up, and I believe that that our ‘keeper Brad Knighton will have to have a big game.

One of the reasons head coach Martin Rennie said he brought in David Ousted was his ability to make the big save to keep his team in the match, and so the gauntlet was thrown down to Mr. Knighton.

Brad certainly stepped up against D.C. United, earning his first shutout of the season.

We have defended a lot better in the last two games, but Sporting are a different proposition all together. In their game on Saturday against Columbus Crew they created chance after chance and it will be up to Brad to come up with the big save in a key moment that will make the difference in the game.

Kei Kamara

Kei Kamara scores first of two goals against Columbus Crew

Kei Kamara scored two goals in Sporting 3-2 victory over the Crew and certainly looks to be rounding into the form he showed last year. He has now appeared in the last seven games for KC since returning from his loan agreement with Norwich City FC (English Premier League) on May 6.

Last year, Kamara had a single season career high in goals (11) assists (8) and led MLS in shots with 134, which won him Sporting Kansas City Offensive Player of the Year for 2012. He is quick and very strong with tremendous leaping abilities and works very hard for the team. He is a player that can really ignite his team and we need to focus a lot of attention on him and limit the damage he could cause us.

Scrappy game

'Caps prepare for Sporting Kansas City

We have seen our team compete and play some good soccer (especially at home) against a number of the top teams in MLS.

However in this game, to get a big result, we should want to make it ugly and look to frustrate Sporting by making it a scrappy game.

Don’t get me wrong, we still need to retain some good possession throughout the game, but if the game becomes open we will be playing to KC’s strengths, as they are a very athletic team.

With the roll we are on at the moment we will be going into this game with a lot of confidence, but what will be needed on the night is a good road performance where we look to take the crowd out of the game by making the game scrappy and doing what is needed to come away with a positive result.
