Whitecaps FC U-23 to travel to face Calgary Foothills FC U-23 in friendly on June 8

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that the club’s U-23 team will travel to Alberta to play Calgary Foothills FC U-23 in a friendly match on Sunday, June 8. The match will kickoff at 5 p.m. MT at Shouldice Athletic Park’s Encana Field.

“We’re really excited to travel to Alberta to play Calgary Foothills FC,” said Whitecaps FC director of soccer development Dan Lenarduzzi. “They’ve done a fantastic job at developing local talent over the years, so we’re looking forward to a competitive match.”

Among the players to come through Calgary Foothills FC are Whitecaps FC first team defender Sam Adekugbe and Residency midfielder Mitch Piraux. Currently on the Foothills FC staff and U-23 roster is former Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Simon Thomas.

"We are delighted to host Vancouver Whitecaps FC in Calgary once again after a 10 year absence,” said Foothills FC head coach and technical director Tommy Wheeldon Jr. “They have built a phenomenal franchise in that time from their MLS team down to their Residency program. We hope to put on an entertaining show for the soccer fans of Calgary as we build towards our mission of bringing high level soccer back to this city".

The match will mark the ‘Caps first time playing in Calgary in 10 years. The last time Whitecaps FC played in Calgary was when the first team played at McMahon Stadium against Calgary Mustangs in the United Soccer Leagues First Division on June 18, 2004.
