BIOGRAPHYPROFILEA defender/midfielder who made a rapidly successful rise to the Whitecaps first team, Ethan Gage played a pivotal role in the men's team's run to the 2008 USL-1 championship title. The Cochrane, Alberta, native joined the Residency program on July 31, 2007. VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC–USL-1 2008: Following the PDL season, Gage made his debut with the senior team when he came on as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 away defeat to Charleston Battery on Aug. 3. His first appearance in USL-1 came a day after he appeared in the PDL semifinal defeat away to Thunder Bay Chill. A further three substitute appearances followed before Gage earned his first USL-1 start in the 1-0 home victory over Montreal Impact on Sep. 13. That was followed by another start in the final regular season match on Sep. 20, as the Whitecaps won 3-2 at Seattle Sounders. Gage then made two substitute appearances in the playoffs before starting in the semifinal, second leg win over Montreal on Oct. 5, as well as the USL-1 Championship Final, as the Whitecaps defeated Puerto Rico Islanders 2-1 at Swangard Stadium on Oct. 12. 2009: Gage became the first player from the club's Residency program to appear in a Nutrilite Canadian Championship match, as he replaced winger Ansu Toure in the second half of the Whitecaps 1-0 defeat at Major League Soccer club Toronto FC on May 6. It was in the Canadian Championship that Gage scored his first goal for the Whitecaps men's team on May 27. The midfielder's second-half strike gave the Whitecaps a 1-0 home win over Montreal, with the result eliminating the Impact from the three-club competition as defending champions. WHITECAPS FC RESIDENCY–USL PDL 2008: The midfielder started every match in the regular season and playoffs, as the Residency squad missed out on the PDL Championship Final after a 2-1 semifinal defeat to eventual champions Thunder Bay Chill in Northern Ontario. His two goals that season came in a 4-1 home victory over BYU Cougars on May 31. 2009: Gage started the Residency team's final match of the PDL season on July 19, as they lost 4-0 at arch-rivals Victoria Highlanders. VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC RESIDENCY 2007-08: As part of the program's inaugural group of players, Gage made four starts during the team's first trip to Germany in late Oct. 2007. Those starts came against Jahn Regensburg U-19's on Oct. 25, VfB Stuttgart U-19's on Oct. 27, 1860 Munich U-19/U-23 side on Oct. 30, and Bavarian amateur club SC Zwiesel on Oct. 31. At Dallas Cup XXIX, Gage appeared in the Residency's opening U-19 Super Group Bracket C match, as they fell 1-0 to Portuguese giants Benfica on Mar. 16, 2008. Later that spring in Germany, Gage made starts against SV Stuttgarter Kickers U-19's on Apr. 30 and VfL Neckarau U-19's on May 8. He also helped the Residency team to a third-place finish at the INSEL-CUP junior international tournament in Germany. 2008-09: Gage started as a defender during the Residency team's first four matches of their successful 12-day tour of Japan in Dec. 2008. He appeared in friendly wins over Vissel Kobe U-19's (Dec. 7), Takigawa Kobe U-19's (Dec. 8), Kyoto Sanga U-19's (Dec. 10), and Gamba Osaka U-19's (Dec. 11) before leaving the tour to join Canada's U-20 national team in Florida later that month. In Apr. 2009, Gage was a starting centre back for the Residency team, as he led the Whitecaps to the U-19 Super Group final at Dallas Cup XXX. He appeared in all five of the team's matches in Texas that spring. 2009-10: Gage started all three of the Residency's matches at Dallas Cup XXXI. Drawn in Bracket D of the U-19 Super Group, the midfielder faced Germany's Eintracht Frankfurt (Mar. 28), United States national team (91/92 - Mar. 29), and Mexico national team (91/92 - Mar. 31). Gage also appeared as a second-half substitute during a 1-1 friendly draw with Germany's TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Apr. 3. GERMAN BUNDESLIGA 2009-10: Gage joined the U-23 side of German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt for a two-week trial in Aug. 2009 before having a similar two-week trial with the U-23 side of German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg in Nov. 2009. INTERNATIONAL Gage was a member of Canada's U-15 Development squad in 2006, and in 2007, the midfielder took part in training camps with the Canadian U-16 Development team. He has also a member of the National Training Centre (Prairies region) program between 2005 and 2007. U-20: The defender/midfielder was called into Canada's U-20 national team for a training camp in Florida in Dec. 2008. During the camp, Gage made late substitute appearances in the 3-0 friendly win over Haiti on Dec. 18 and the 1-0 friendly defeat to hosts USA on Dec. 22. In Mar. 2009, he was one of seven Whitecaps players to be named in Canada's 20-player squad for the 2009 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Trinidad & Tobago. Playing in Group B, Gage was a second-half substitute in the 2-0 win over Mexico on Mar. 9. He then started the 2-1 defeat to eventual champions Costa Rica on Mar. 11. Those results meant Canada missed out on qualification for the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt. YOUTH/AMATEUR Gage spent three successful years with Calgary Villains FC. As team captain, he was the driving force in winning two Alberta provincial championship titles at U-14 and U-15 levels in 2005 and 2006. He also represented Alberta at the U-13, U-14, and U-16 levels, having led his province to a gold medal at the 2007 Canadian U-16 All-Star Championship in Regina, SK.
