Raise-a-Reader Vancouver

This Wednesday, October 3, will be the eleventh annual Raise-a-Reader Vancouver campaign. The annual event sees hundreds of volunteers take to the streets of downtown Vancouver in the morning exchanging special edition copies of The Vancouver Sun for donation. This year among the volunteer and local celebrities will be Whitecaps men’s captain Jeff Clarke, defender Geordie Lyall, forward Eduardo Sebrango, and midfielder Alfredo Valente.

The Raise-a-Reader campaign was created by The Vancouver Sun in 1997 to increase awareness of literacy and raise money to fund children's literacy programs. Since the inception, Raise-a-Reader Vancouver has raised over almost $3.45 million in 10 years in support of children's literacy initiatives throughout British Columbia.

Low literacy skills are some of society's hidden handicaps. Statistics show that a shocking 22% of adult Canadians have serious problems with reading and comprehension. Raise-a-Reader is designed to address the issue head-on and raise money and awareness for children and family literacy, building stronger local communities.
