Vancouver Whitecaps FC have announced that they have transferred defender Adrian Cann to Esbjerg forenede Boldklubber (EfB) of the Danish Superliga – Denmark’s premier league – for an undisclosed amount. Cann had a one-week trial with EfB earlier this year.
Cann, 27, joined the Whitecaps in March 2006, after playing his first two seasons in the United Soccer Leagues First Division with the Montreal Impact. The six-foot-three, 184-pound centre back was named Vancouver’s team captain at the start of the season and has played eight regular season and one Nutrilite Canadian Championship matches this year.
Last year, Cann enjoyed his most successful season with the ‘Caps, earning the club’s Outstanding Defender award. Cann started 26 of 27 regular season and playoff matches and led the team in minutes played with 2,253. The defender scored his first professional goal in a 3-1 away victory against the California Victory on May 19 and was named to the USL-1 Team of the Week three times. Cann, who was born in Toronto, Ontario, but raised in Thornhill, Ontario, has played 63 matches for Vancouver, scored one goal and added two assists in 5,026 minutes of action.
Cann made his senior international debut in a 1-0 friendly win over Martinique on January 30, 2008. During that same national team camp, Cann played in a 2-0 friendly win over the Danish club Vejle Boldklub in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, four days later.
More recently, Cann was away on Canadian international duty for a month and as a result, he missed four Whitecaps matches. He dressed, but did not play, in Canada’s 3-2 loss against Brazil on May 31, in Seattle, Washington, and played the second half of Canada’s 2-2 draw with Panama on June 4, in Sunrise, Florida. Cann also played in Canada’s 4-1 World Cup Qualifying win over St Vincent & the Grenadines in Montreal on June 20.
The Whitecaps next match is on Canada Day – Tuesday July 1 – when they travel to southern Ontario to battle Toronto FC of Major League Soccer in the fourth match of the inaugural Nutrilite Canadian Championship. Toronto won their first match of the tournament 1-0 over Montreal Impact and Vancouver has lost both of their matches 2-0 to Montreal. Tuesday’s tilt will kick off at 1:00 p.m. (PT) and can be seen live nationally on CBC.
