The latest Whitecaps move for better finishing was to reacquire forward Charles Gbeke from the Montreal Impact in exchange for midfielder Tony Donatelli and cash on June 30. It's likely not their last.
Gbeke, 30, played in three games for the Whitecaps -- spread out over three stints -- before he subbed in at Toronto on July 1 and headed a shot off the post.
If he can regain his 2007 form when he tied for the USL-1 scoring lead with 10 goals, then it's a great move for the Caps, with a league-low 11 goals for. This year, however, the Ivory Coaster has one goal in seven starts and 12 appearances.
Donatelli, who scored three playoff goals in the Caps' 2006 title run, was deemed expendable with so many talented wing players.
"It's a good thing," said coach Teitur Thordarson, who's relied on Eddy Sebrango (four goals) and Nick Addlery (one) up front and occasionally brings Jason Jordan (two) off the bench. "It's possible he can help us."
Alternatives are expected to come in the form of residency players. Dever Orgill, 18, called up once already this season, is Thordarson's first choice, but word on Thursday was he was being summoned to the Jamaican under-20 nats.
