New signings from SVG will add Caribbean flair to Whitecaps - The Province

Wesley Charles says his countrymen are going to wow the Whitecaps.

The Saint Vincent and the Grenadines defender will soon be joined by fellow SVG internationals, forward Marlon James and defender Cornelius Huggins. The Caps confirmed the signings Wednesday.

Both helped Kedah to the Malaysia Super League title, Malaysia FA Cup and, just days ago, the Malaysia Cup. James is especially intriguing, scoring 47 times in as many games this season, and Charles said James's talent will definitely translate to the USL First Division.

"He's going to do very well in this league," said Charles. "Knowing him for a long time and knowing his ability, he can come and contribute.

"Cornelius is a very experienced defender. Very simple, but a very skillful player. I really enjoy playing with him, and I'm really excited to have him here. I know he will do a lot."

James had expressed a desire to play for San Jose of MLS, but Kedah -- with games remaining in their title run -- wouldn't let him out of his contract before the MLS transfer window closed on Aug. 15. Both players are signed with Vancouver through the end of the season.

Charles said that the Montreal Impact made a big play, too, but he talked up Vancouver in a phone conversation with the players a week ago.

James will be available for selection Sept. 5 at Puerto Rico, while Huggins joins the squad Sept. 7.
