Whitecaps keep USL title in Northwest - The Portland Tribune

The Portland Timbers had no success against the Vancouver Whitecaps this season.

On Sunday, with the United Soccer Leagues First Division title on the line, the Puerto Rico Islanders didn't, either.

Vancouver beat Puerto Rico 2-1 in Burnaby, British Columbia, to claim the league title, a year after the Seattle Sounders reigned in USL-1. Two years ago, Vancouver also won the championship.

Portland, which finished last in the regular-season standings, went 0-3 against Vancouver this season, losing 1-0, 3-1 and 2-1.

The Timbers went 1-1-1 against Puerto Rico.

Former Timbers Jeff Clarke and Noah Delgado each had an assist in Sunday's final. Clarke helped Vancouver take a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute, and Delgado, the Islanders' captain, assisted on the tying goal in the 68th minute.

Ivory Coast native Charles Gbeke's second goal of the match for Vancouver came in the 74th minute. Gbeke was named the game's MVP.

Vancouver joined Seattle, Rochester, Montreal, the Milwaukee Rampage and Colorado Foxes as teams that have won the league title two or more times.
