With the holiday season nearly upon us, everyone at the Vancouver Whitecaps FC would like to wish our fans the very best over the holiday period and for 2009.
We look forward to a new and exciting season in the New Year after an eventful campaign in 2008, which culminated in the men's team winning their second United Soccer Leagues First Division championship title in three seasons with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Puerto Rico Islanders at Swangard Stadium on October 12. Though we are in the middle of our offseason, Whitecaps staff have been working hard to prepare for 2009, with our season ticket campaign in full swing.
In recent weeks, head coach Teitur Thordarson has been working hard to assemble a talented squad for the New Year, as the men's team look to successfully defend their USL-1 title and enjoy success in the 2009 Nutrilite Canadian Championship. Our Residency program had a very successful first year of existence, which culminated in a playoff semifinal berth in their first season in the USL Premier Development League last summer. Four of the program's players earned call-ups to the men's team last season, while three more Residency players joined Germany's FC Energie Cottbus U-19 Junior Bundesliga team on loan for the 2008-09 campaign. The Whitecaps women's team will also be looking for similar success in the W-League next year after reaching the Western Conference playoff final in 2008.
Meanwhile, the club’s youth development program had a rewarding year and is eager to build on the successes of the past 12 months. Whitecaps Prospect teams took part in the 2008 Pacific Coast Soccer League season, while nine Whitecaps and BCSA affiliate teams made the trip to Florida last month for the 2008 USL Super Y-League North American finals, with Mountain WFC becoming U-16 Boys North American champions after a 2-0 final win over New Jersey's TSF Academy on November 25.
With much to look forward to in the New Year, including news on our bid to join Major League Soccer, we will be taking a well-deserved break over the holiday period, and as a result, the Whitecaps office will be closed from Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve), and will re-open in the New Year on Monday, January 5.
Whitecaps fans can still apply for season tickets over the holiday season. Click here to complete our online season ticket form and a Whitecaps Sales Account Manager will contact you as early as January 5, 2009.
Happy Holidays from Vancouver Whitecaps FC!
