BURNABY, B.C. — Martin Nash scored in the 63rd minute as the Vancouver Whitecaps earned their first win of season with a 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers in USL First Division play Saturday night.
Seeking their first home goal of the season, the Whitecaps applied pressure throughout the opening half, outshooting Portland 9-3, but were unable to get it past former L.A. Galaxy keeper Steve Cronin who was making his first start.
After continuing the attack to in the second half, Vancouver (1-1-2) finally scored off a corner by Ansu Toure. Portland's Cameron Knowles attempted to clear the ball, but it rolled to Nash who put it past a helpless Cronin.
Jay Nolly made six saves in net for the Whitecaps, while Cronin finished with three for Portland (0-1-0).
The Whitecaps next match is on the road in Minnesota next Saturday night.
