Defender Justin Thompson moves on

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announce that defender Justin Thompson has tendered his resignation from the club, effective immediately. The defender, who returned to the Whitecaps after a four-year hiatus, has opted to pursue other business opportunities.

“I will miss my time on the pitch but I believe the time has come for me to look to the future and take advantage of some opportunities that have come my way,” said the 28-year defender from North Vancouver, BC. “I hope I will be able to steer my career in a direction that continues to include soccer in some capacity. The Whitecaps are a fantastic organization and I’ve really enjoyed my time here.”

Following a successful collegiate career at Fairfield University in 2002, Thompson enjoyed stints with English clubs Bury FC, Hornchurch FC, and Worcester City FC. He also had spells with United Soccer Leagues First Division sides Virginia Beach Mariners and Portland Timbers. Thompson has also represented Canada at the U-20 and U-23 international levels.

This season with the Whitecaps, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound centre back has appeared in six matches for 376 minutes of action. His career numbers with the Whitecaps include 25 games played for 1,899 minutes.

“Justin was a constant professional during his time with the club and was a positive influence for our younger players,” said Whitecaps head coach Teitur Thordarson. “We wish him the best of luck with his future endeavours.”
