Whitecaps Charles, Gbeke suspended - Canadian Press

VANCOUVER -- Vancouver Whitecaps defender Wesley Charles and forward Charles Gbeke have been given two-game suspensions for a confrontation in a United Soccer Leagues game last week.

Charles and Gbeke were suspended one game by the league, and the Whitecaps handed both players an additional one-game ban. Both players were fined Monday for "unsportsmanlike behaviour" stemming from an incident in Friday's 3-2 win over Miami FC Blues.

With the Whitecaps leading in the 85th minute, Charles and Gbeke nearly came to blows at mid-field. Referee John Oliva saw the incident and immediately slapped Charles with a red card, while Gbeke was given a yellow card.

After Gbeke was subbed out for Gordon Chin in the 90th minute, the Ivory Coast native kicked several water bottles along the Whitecaps' substitutes bench. Oliva quickly handed Gbeke a second yellow card, followed by a red card.

Charles and Gbeke will miss Saturday's game in Montreal and Tuesday's game in Cleveland.
