Caps champs tonight? - 24 Hours

By BOB MACKIN

The Vancouver Whitecaps could win the Voyageurs Cup tonight from the comfort of their Saputo Stadium seats (5 p.m. Sportsnet).

They will be in Montreal watching the Impact host Toronto FC in the last match of the Nutrilite Canadian Champioanship series. The Caps lead the three-team playoff with a 3-1 record and will become Canada's entry in the CONCACAF Champions League unless TFC beats Montreal by four goals. TFC has only scored four goals once.

Whitecaps' fans are gathering at the Lamplighter in Gastown for a viewing party. The Puerto Rico Islanders will be Vancouver or Toronto's opponent in the opening, July 28-30 leg.

The Impact will miss five regulars, including former Whitecaps' striker Eduardo Sebrango who is in Cuba for a family matter. TFC hopes to have Canadian captain and defender Jim Brennan back from an ankle injury.

"They're not going to roll over," TFC coach Chris Cummins said.

The Whitecaps meet Montreal on Saturday in United Soccer Leagues' First Division play. It will be the first of two Caps' matches without the suspended Wesley Charles and Charles Gbeke.
