Team BC reach Canada Games semis

Team BC advanced to the semifinals of the women's soccer competition at the 2009 Canada Games following a 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Manitoba on Thursday afternoon.

Vancouver Whitecaps Prospects Women's team striker Jenna Richardson netted her third goal of the tournament, while Jaclyn Sawicki scored from the penalty spot to keep British Columbia on track to defend the gold medal title they won back in 2005.

"We remained patient and we were able to score," said Team BC head coach Jesse Symons. "The game was never in doubt, it was always just a matter of time."

Team BC posted a second-straight clean sheet, while benefitting from some good fortune to find the back of the net for the seventh time in their three matches in Summerside, Prince Edward Island.

"It was an unfortunate (opening) goal," said Manitoba head coach Rob Gale. "We tried to clear the ball, but it fell to British Columbia’s best striker."

Team BC will now face Ontario in one semifinal, while Quebec plays Alberta in the other semi. Both matches take place on Friday.
