Team BC suffered a 2-0 defeat to Western Canadian rivals Alberta in their final Pool D match of the men's soccer competition at the 2009 Canada Games on Wednesday afternoon.
Two goals by Sean Colvin saw Alberta win Pool D and set up a quarterfinal showdown with host province Prince Edward Island, with both goals coming against a strong wind in the first half.
British Columbia enjoyed the majority of the possession during the opening exchanges, but Alberta were able to work their way back into the contest, with Colvin striking the match winner on 37 minutes. He then sealed the win for Alberta with his second goal six minutes later.
Both sides created chances after the break, but Team BC were unable to find their way back into the match, as Alberta wrapped up an important two-goal victory.
The result sees Team BC face a more challenging quarterfinal clash on Thursday, with Bart Choufour's side facing Ontario at UPEI.
"I can only be happy with the way the boys played. Even in the second half against the wind, we continued to press the other team," Choufour said after Wednesday's defeat. "Scoring is the only department where I didn’t think we did well in. We are in tough tomorrow against Ontario, but this match will give us confidence heading into that game."
