Three NBA stars and a former World Cup-winning soccer player will hit the pitch this weekend in David Lam Park for underprivileged children.
Steve Nash’s charity soccer match, Showdown in Downtown, kicks off at 3 p.m. Saturday.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Nash, in Stanley Park Thursday before practising with athletes in the Whitecaps Residency Program.
The event, which is free, pits Nash, a few former Whitecaps, NBA stars Baron Davis (L.A. Clippers) and Hasheem Thabeet (Memphis Grizzlies) against young athletes in the Whitecaps Residency Program.
Jouri Djorkaeff, who won the World Cup with France in 1998 and the Euro in 2000, is also taking part.
“It’s a great format to have guys from basketball and soccer playing together,” said Nash.
“It’s not in an arena where people are miles away. It’ll be a great chance for fans to be within arms length of some people they watch on TV.”
Fundraising The Steve Nash Foundation, created to aid underprivileged children, has donated $100,000 annually since 2005 to B.C. Grants.
