The Province - Sanchez steps in for injured Nash, absent Steele - @ProvinceWeber
The pre-season talk was of how Teitur Thordarson would manage his crowded house in central midfield — a trio of repeat all-stars in Martin Nash, Jonny Steele and Ricardo Sanchez. Now the question is: How could he manage without all three of them?

On the heels of Nash tweaking his back while lifting a box at home Saturday, Steele has returned to his home in Philadelphia to deal with a personal issue. Neither will be in the lineup Saturday when the Whitecaps (2-1-2) host Montreal (2-1-1) at Swangard Stadium in a USSF D-2 game.

A crucial Nutrilite Canadian Championship clash against Toronto FC follows on Wednesday. Nash expects to return for that, but Steele's timeline is unclear.

The Province - Hirano an example to follow - @ProvinceWeber
As players collapsed on the Simon Fraser University turf Tuesday, tanks empty after a taxing sprint session to finish practice, Takashi Hirano, 36 in two months, circled the field, jogging out the lactic acid.

For once, the Japanese defender wasn't the last Whitecap to shut it down; Luca Bellisomo took the honours, but he was following Hirano's lead.

"It's great feeding off his energy and his attitude," said Bellisomo, at 23 one of the younger Whitecaps. "He's a great example of how a professional soccer player should behave, how a quality person should behave.

"He does everything in his power to put himself in a position to help the team and he rubs off on players.”

Weber's blog: Back of the NetThe Vancouver Sun - Whitecaps’ Chris Williams proud of team’s defensive record - @bconstantineau
Don’t believe everything you read in Wikipedia.

The online source says Vancouver Whitecaps defender Chris Williams pulls in a cool $850,000 a year playing for the tier-two USSF D-2 squad.

That’s twice the 2009 guaranteed salary of Toronto FC star Dwayne De Rosario and nearly the same pay packet hauled in by L.A. Galaxy and U.S. international superstar Landon Donovan.

“It’s not true,” Williams said Thursday, when asked about the absurd salary misinformation. “My mother-in-law called my wife last week and said: ‘Does Chris know about this?’ ”

Williams may not make superstar money in Vancouver, but the Canadian international defender gets lots of playing time on a team with a great defensive record so far this season.

Montreal Gazette- Division lead on line as Impact visits 'Caps
The Impact will be back in action tonight (10:30 p.m., SRC) when they visit the Vancouver Whitecaps in United States Soccer Federation Division 2 Pro League play.

The Impact is coming off a 1-0 loss to Toronto FC Wednesday night in Nutrilite Canadian Championship play at Saputo Stadium. That loss eliminated Montreal's chances of advancing in the national tournament.

But in USSF league play, the Impact (2-1-1) can move into first place in the NASL Conference standings ahead of the Whitecaps (2-1-2) with a victory tonight. The Impact and Whitecaps played to a 1-1 draw in Canadian Championship play on May 5 in Vancouver.

"This game is very important because if we win in Vancouver, we secure the first place in our division when we come back to Montreal," Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos said. "I know we are able to get the three points (tonight). The team morale is good." The Impact is unbeaten in its last three regular-season games (2-0-1).
