Prospects hit Richmond for a dozen

Vancouver Whitecaps Prospects Women kept their record at a perfect 4W-0L-0D Tuesday night, as they tallied an even dozen in a 12-0 romp over Richmond GSC. Jaclyn Sawicki, Jenna Richardson, and Abigail Raymer all netted hat-tricks in the midweek Pacific Coast Soccer League (PCSL) match-up, which was played at Simon Fraser University (SFU) Field #4.

Richardson was in fine form on Tuesday, and she got the ball rolling - so to speak - by blasting a 25-yard rocket into the top corner, just on the quarter-hour mark. Seconds later, Richardson played a nice pass to spring Taylor Shannik down the right, and her high cross eluded the grasp of Richmond keeper Yvonne Riopel, allowing Raymer to collect the ball in front, spin, and score. Suddenly, it was 2-0.

On 21 minutes, Riopel made a nice save off a well-placed Nikki Ambrose header to deny a goal, after some pretty build-up play. The Whitecaps would not be denied though, and three minutes later, Richardson flipped a nifty pass ahead to Raymer in the box, and she then dropped it for Richardson, who again overpowered the goalkeeper with a fierce shot.

Richmond then came close to breaking Vancouver's shutout streak. A dipping shot from Taryn Lim had to be touched wide of the post by goalkeeper Ally Williamson. Then from the corner kick a huge scramble ensued, in which Bella James hit the post, and then Stephanie Thibert rang the rebound off the crossbar.

Vancouver came straight back up the field and made it 4-0. Shannik, who was having a field day with her forays down the right, slipped it inside for Richardson, who played it square for Sawicki, and she controlled the ball then put it away.

On 34 minutes, a high diagonal ball from Shannik dropped nicely for Sawicki breaking, and her first touch took her past the keeper, allowing her to fire into an empty net.

Sawicki then completed her natural first-half hat-trick, as she got on the end of a long ball from Jen Castillo and tested the keeper with a hard shot. Riopel made the stop, but Sawicki claimed the rebound, and curled it around the keeper and in.

It was 6-0 at halftime.

The Whitecaps made wholesale changes at the break, but it did little to alter the course of the game. On 55 minutes, substitute Katie Turney threaded a great through ball for Richardson, and her explosive pace meant the Richmond defence could only watch, as she stabbed it under the keeper to complete her hat-trick.

It was Raymer's turn to claim her hat-trick on 59 minutes. Turney found her with a through ball, and she fired it low to make it 8-0. A minute after that, Turney was again the provider, getting it ahead to Raymer. She showed great strength and determination to fight off her marker in front of goal and fire it in for her third of the night, and second hat-trick in as many games.

For a while, it looked like the score might remain in single digits. Richardson shot wide on another breakaway, then moments later, the keeper made a spectacular double save to deny Richardson and Sawicki.

The Prospects struck again with five minutes remaining. Shannik played a nice ball to Maryse Reichgeld on the right and she finished well with a hard low shot to make it 10-0. Moments later, Reichgeld played a great pass to Ambrose in front and she slotted it home for goal number 11.

Finally, in the final minute, Turney played it ahead to Raymer, who was a mile offside, but alertly left the ball for Ambrose to run on to. Richmond were caught ball watching, as Ambrose fired in her second of the night.

The win raises the Prospects Women's record to 4W-0L-0D in the PCSL Premier Division standings, having outscored their opposition 31-0! Richmond drop to 0W-4L-1D.

After running roughshod over some of the league's weaker sides, the Whitecaps face a much tougher test in their next match. On Tuesday, May 25, they host defending PCSL regular season champions Fraser Valley Action at SFU Field #4. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. PT.
