Gavin Hollett is the co-founder of OA Projects, a charity that uses soccer to reunite communities in war-torn and deprived areas. Inspired by Canadian heroes such as Romeo Dallaire, Gavin found a way to combine his passion for soccer with his desire to better the world. As an experienced soccer player and skilled coach, Gavin and his team use soccer to create a fun, safe environment to help children to come to terms with the often horrific experiences they have faced during wartime.
OA Projects works directly with small communities, currently concentrating their efforts in a war torn area called Gulu in Uganda, helping to train youth leaders on topics related to peace building, soccer coaching, community leadership, and gender equality. In recent years, OA Projects has conducted five soccer camps for over 400 children led by the locally trained youth coaches, created 2 soccer leagues for over 550 war-affected children, constructed 6 soccer fields used by over 7,000 youth, and distributed equipment to over 70 partner schools, teams and peace clubs.
Gavin’s inclusive, collaborative and transparent style has gained the trust of many individuals and organizations and has lead OA Projects to grow into a robust NGO. The measurable achievements are impressive for a small charity, but it is the impact the soccer camps have had on the children and women who have participated that makes OA such a huge success.
With the support of MLS Soccer and the Home Depot, the Community MVP contest seeks to reward individuals who go above and beyond to make a difference and have a positive impact on their community. As our local winner, Gavin receives two tickets to the 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game being held July 27, 2011 at Red Bull Arena.
In addition to this prize, Gavin is eligible for the grand prize of a $10,000 donation to their charity of choice. In order to help Gavin use soccer as a tool to reunite war torn communities in Uganda, please take the time to vote here.
You can vote as many times as you like. By helping Gavin win the grand prize, you are helping make a difference in the lives of those affected by war and violence in Uganda through the beauty of sport. The Grand Prize winner will be announced during the 2011 AT&T All-Star halftime ceremony.
