After celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving this past weekend, Women’s Weekly returns today following a busy week of CIS, NCAA, and international duty to capture the highlights, storylines, and weekly awards from our 2011 Whitecaps FC women’s team players. With arch-rivals battling in Canada, new records broken, and an interesting feature on one Canadian goalkeeper, it was a week to remember for athletes on both sides of the border.
CIS:
Trinity Western University Spartans goalkeeper Kristen Funk won the battle of BC against Jaclyn Sawicki and her Victoria Vikes last weekend, defeating them 2-1 on Friday. Funk then earned a clean sheet performance on Saturday in a 1-0 victory over Fraser Valley Cascades to improve to 8W-1L-0D this season. (TWU Athletics)
NCAA:
Oregon State Beavers sophomore striker Jenna Richardson continued her dynamic play as she scored two goals against Pac-12 foe Arizona State last week. With a 2-0 victory, Richardson now has six goals and 13 points this season and was selected to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s ‘Women’s College Team of the Week’. (Oregon State Athletics)
Speaking of scoring goals, Nicole Setterlund netted her first goal at Washingston State back on October 2, kickstarting the Cougars to a three game winning streak to tie them with Richardson's Beavers for second place in the Pac-12 conference. (WSU Athletics & Pac-12 Athletics)
North Carolina midfielder Amber Brooks and UCLA striker Sydney Leroux took part in the United States U-23 women’s national team training camp last week. Brooks, “a veteran of two youth World Cups for the USA and captain of the 2008 U-17 Women’s World Cup squad, had an excellent tournament for the U-20s in Germany in 2010”, will be asked to play a defensive role while Leroux’s finishing ability will be a major asset up front. Syracuse junior Tina Romagnuolo took over sole possession of fifth place on SU’S career goal scoring list, as she gave the Orange a 2-0 lead in the first half on the way to a 3-0 victory over Pittsburgh. Romagnuolo scored her 17th goal in her career on a cracker from 25 yards out. (SU Athletics)
Also in the Big East, Shannon Woeller led her Rutgers team to consecutive shutouts against conference rivals Depaul and Notre Dame. After Janosz made a diving save to her left on a Jessica Schuveiller shot, junior Shannon Woeller (Vancouver, Canada) made a save on the line for the Scarlet Knights.” (Rutgers Athletics)
