'Caps Chronicle: Jamaican Swagger

'Caps Chronicle - Jan. 13, 2012

WHITECAPS FC IN THE NEWS

Yesterday’s SuperDraft saw Vancouver Whitecaps FC expand their stable of thoroughbred strikers further by adding the blazing speed of Darren Mattocks. Some are even calling it a transformative draft for the team. (Matthew Doyle – MLSsoccer.com)

The Jamaican international is already bucking to get a start, which is no surprise to former college teammate Michael Nanchoff who describes Mattocks’ style as, “That special Jamaican swagger.” (Marc Weber – The Province)

Mattocks has a lot of positive things to say about what he hopes to achieve in Vancouver, but it’s his college record that really speaks volumes, having outscored former Akron alumni in Portland Timber’s Darlington Nagbe, Seattle Sounder’s Steve Zakuani and Sporting Kansas City’s Teal Bunbury during his two collegiate seasons. Read about his background and what he adds to the squad. (Marc Weber – The Province)

Speaking of talent, right back Chris Estridge was the other player picked up at yesterday’s SuperDraft and comes to the ‘Caps with a lot of accolades of his own. Estridge was named a first-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, an NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region first-team member, and a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2011. Read about what his former coach at Indiana University had to say about Estridge’s selection by Vancouver and how he will be joining fellow Hoosier Lee Nguyen as a member of the Whitecaps’ roster. (Marc Weber – The Province)

Speaking of drafts, Surrey, BC, native and former Whitecaps FC striker Sydney Leroux was today taken first overall by Atlanta Beat in the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) Draft! (Bruce Constantineau – Vancouver Sun)
