On Sunday, a wave of Whitecaps FC supporters will be descending on the University of Victoria’s Centennial Stadium to take in the ‘Caps preseason friendly against University of Victoria Vikes men’s soccer team in the provincial capital at 1 p.m. PT. With Round 2 just around the corner, this will be the first and only opportunity for BC soccer fans to get an up-close and personal look at new head coach Martin Rennie’s revitalized squad prior to the much anticipated season opener against Montreal Impact at BC Place on Saturday, March 10.
It should prove a historic day for soccer in British Columbia and Canada, as the meeting marks the first ever match between a Major League Soccer (MLS) side and a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) team. The event is made even more notable with the UVic Vikes representing the best of Canadian university soccer, having just completed a championship season in 2011.
