'Caps Chronicle: 9 days to First Kick!

'Caps Chronicle - Mar. 1, 2012

WHITECAPS FC IN THE NEWS:

It's exactly ‘nine’ days until the season opener against Montreal Impact on March 10, at BC Place, so to add to the excitement we'll be doing a countdown themed ‘Caps Chronicle for each day leading up to First Kick. Today, we're left with ‘nine’ days to go.

Sebastian Le Toux wore number ‘nine’ last season in Philadelphia. He's changed to number seven with the 'Caps, but he hopes to keep producing goals like he has the past two seasons. “We are happy with our performance but we know we can still progress a lot,” Le Toux said after scoring the first goal in the 'Caps 3-0 win over Sporting Kansas City at  the Disney Pro Soccer Classic. Three goals against Sporting Kansas City, plus clean sheet number three, plus win number three at the Disney Pro Soccer Classic. What does that add up to? ‘Nine’ of course. In preseason matches against MLS squads so far, the ‘Caps have outscored their opponents by a total of ‘9’-2. Davide Chiumiento has been a large part of the offense so far this pre-season and he  hopes to continue to contribute to the ‘Caps offense for the upcoming 2012 season. Head Coach Martin Rennie took over the Carolina RailHawks in 200‘9’, where he kept all but three players from the previous year’s roster. One, of those players was midfielder Matt Watson. Rennie has shown faith in Watson at every step, and in turn Rennie has been rewarded by his play, now signing him to an MLS contract with the 'Caps. Read all about Watson playing career and his history with Rennie in Marc Weber’s article. (Marc Weber- The Province)

Whitecaps FC women's alum Robyn Gayle was only '9'-years-old when Canada first played in the FIFA Women's World Cup in 1995. Now she's playing on the national team, and today she helped her country to another triumph at the Cyprus Cup with an injury time goal. The 2-1 victory over Italy gives Canada top place in their group, with one group match left on Sunday versus the Netherlands. If they capture even a draw over the Dutch, the Canucks will play for their third straight Cyprus Cup championship on Tuesday. (Canada.com)

Last but certainly not least, former 'Caps women's player Randee Hermus has been named one of 'nine' athletes to be inducted into the Simon Fraser University Athletics Hall of Fame. Read all about Hermus story and her rise through the ranks. (Gary Ahuja - The Langley Times)

WHITECAPS FC IN THE HOUSE:

Whitecaps FC wrapped up the round robin portion of the Disney Pro Soccer Classic with a three to nil victory over Sporting KC. If you take that three to nil score line multiply it by the three wins the ‘Caps have claimed in sunny Florida, and you have our magic number of ‘nine’. “It’s always nice to win, but I thought we played well,” said Head Coach Martin Rennie. Check out the story along with video highlightsHERE. (Simon Fudge - whitecapsfc.com)
