WHITECAPS FC IN THE NEWS:
Round 2 for Vancouver Whitecaps FC kicked off last Saturday in what proved to be a cracker-jack of a match in front of a sold-out crowd of 21,000 at BC Place. The highly anticipated second season opener for Whitecaps FC was the most watched Major League Soccer (MLS) game in Canadian history, as viewers flocked to watch the all-Canadian match-up against expansion side Montreal Impact as they made their league debut. (TSN)
It would be a positive result for the ‘Caps as they earned a clean sheet against Impact head coach Jesse Marsch’s new squad, defeating Montreal 2-0. That positivity is likely a result of head coach Martin Rennie’s positive outlook, which appears to be contagious as both the squad and the supporters appear completely fired-up for the new season. Many have already begun to herald the Rennie era as the “Rennie-sance.” (Marc Weber - The Province)
Canadian viewers weren’t the only ones who set records that day with offseason acquisition Sebastian Le Toux opening his account for Whitecaps FC by scoring a record breaking opening goal just four minutes into the match. One reporter exclaimed, “As it turns out, that early strike was the fastest ever scored in a Major League Soccer season opener.” Be sure to watch the video highlight of the clever head-on pass by striker partner Eric Hassli which helped put Le Toux one-on-one with Impact keeper Donovan Ricketts. Even before the match began the sold-out crowd of 21,000 was described as being nothing short of “electric”. It’s hard to put into words exactly what it feels like to be surrounded by that many cheering and chanting supporters, particularly what it looks like to the players on the field. So be sure to watch this video by the Vancouver Sun which shows everything from the supporters march before the game, to side-line video right on the pitch of Camilo’s samba goal celebration. The attacking force of the squad was definitely a force to be reckoned with, but one reporter notes that we may have witnessed the beginnings of an “unsung hero” as well. Whitecaps defensive midfielder Jun Marques Davidson’s sliding, last man tackle denied a dangerous cross to Impact striker Sanna Nyassi just before the break. It was a number of great plays like that throughout the game which earned him the distinction of man-of-the-match. While that might easily go to the head of some, Davidson was nothing if not humble stating, “Personally, I'm very happy to get the 'Man of the Match' but you see all these players that played today. I feel that the 'Man of the Match' was the whole team.” (Michael McColl – Canadian Soccer News)
In case you want to relive the Whitecaps First Kick again and again, complete match highlights can be viewed over at MLSsoccer.com. One highlight you definitely don’t want to miss is Camilo’s early candidate for goal of the year in slow motion. The four player build-up demonstrates the team’s creativity and fluidity on attack, which is equally as impressive when seen from a distance. (MLSsoccer.com)

Dr. Scott Cooley knows that success both on and off the field is a joint effort. That's why Vancouver Whitecaps FC recently donated the club's old jerseys, shorts and socks to Dr. Cooley, who went with a group of chiropractors to Ghana to give free chiropractic treatments. Josh Nanavaty has the details. (Josh Nanavaty - whitecapsfc.com)
