VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC confirm today that centre back Carlyle Mitchell, winger Dane Richards, as well as strikers Atiba Harris and Kenny Miller have been called up by their countries for international duty this month.
Miller, 32, will join up with the Scotland squad for two important 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in European zone Group A. Scotland will travel to Cardiff to face British ‘Home Nations’ rivals Wales on Friday, October 12, before heading to the European continent to take on Belgium in Brussels on Tuesday, October 16. Scotland are looking for their first win in World Cup qualifying after drawing at home to Balkan nations Serbia and Macedonia last month.
Richards, 28, has been called up by Jamaica for two crucial World Cup qualifiers in the CONCACAF region. Sitting in a three-way tie on seven points in Group A, The Reggae Boyz travel to Central America to face Guatemala on Friday, October 12, before wrapping up their group schedule by hosting Caribbean rivals Antigua & Barbuda in Kingston on Tuesday, October 16. Jamaica must finish top two in Group A in order to reach the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, known as ‘The Hexagonal’ or ‘The Hex’ in 2013.
Mitchell (25 - Trinidad & Tobago) and Harris (27 - St. Kitts and Nevis) have been called up by their national teams for first-round action in the 2012 Caribbean Cup. As hosts of Group 5, Harris’ Sugar Boyz will take on Mitchell’s Soca Warriors on Sunday, October 14. Beforehand, both nations will also play Anguilla and French Guiana on Wednesday, October 10, and Friday, October 12. The Group 5 winners will secure a spot in the second round of the tournament later this month.
