REWIND: A look back at the last match between Whitecaps FC and Toronto FC in 2012
Since 2008, Vancouver Whitecaps FC have battled Toronto FC in various competitions. Over the five years, the ‘Caps have held a record of 5W-4L-5D against their Canadian archrivals and look to improve upon that record this season. With an MLS match and potential Canadian Championship matches lined up this season, the Blue and White will definitely get that opportunity.
2008:
July 1: Nutrilite Canadian Championship – BMO Field – Toronto, ON
In their first ever match versus their Ontario rivals, the then second division Whitecaps FC defeated Toronto FC by a score of 1-0. Martin Nash scored the winner for the ‘Caps on a penlaty kick against their MLS foes in a meorable Canada Day victory, handing TFC their first home loss of the season after the Reds went undefeated at BMO Field (5W-0L-3D) in their first eight home matches in MLS.
July 9: Nutrilite Canadian Championship – Swangard Stadium – Burnaby, BC
In their second Canadian clash that year, Whitecaps FC and Toronto FC finished with a 2-2 draw in Vancouver. Eduardo Sebrango scored both goals for the Blue & White, while Maurice Edu and Rohan Ricketts scored for Toronto FC.
2009:
May 6: Canadian Championship – BMO Field – Toronto, ON
Whitecaps FC suffered a 1-0 loss to Toronto FC. Former (and future) 'Caps midfielder Kevin Harmse had the goal for Toronto.
June 2: Canadian Championship – Swangard Stadium – Burnaby, BC
Whitecaps FC won their second match of the 2009 Canadian Championship by a score of 2-0. Ansu Toure had both goals for the ‘Caps they looked to be well on their way to a first Canadian Championship title, but it was not enough. Toronto FC needed to beat Montreal Impact by at least four goals in the final match of the tournament to claim the title, and an unmotivated Impact squad obliged, succumbing to a 6-1 defeat to a highly motivated TFC side to allow them to win the Canadian Championship.
2010:
May 19: Canadian Championship – Vancouver, BC
In a sign of things to come, Whitecaps FC and Toronto FC finished with a scoreless draw in the ‘Caps second match of the 2009 Canadian Championship.
June 2: Canadian Championship – BMO Field – Toronto, ON
With TFC having already won the round robin tournament, the two clubs played to another scoreless draw in the ‘Caps final match of the 2009 Canadian Championship.
2011:
March 19: MLS regular season – Empire Field – Vancouver, BC
In their MLS debut, Whitecaps FC defeated Toronto FC by a score of 4-2 in front of a sold-out, energized crowd at Empire Field. Former Whitecaps FC striker Eric Hassli (who went on to play for TFC, and now it at FC Dallas) had two goals, while current Toronto midfielder Terry Dunfield and Atiba Harris (now on Colorado Rapids) scored the other two goals for the 'Caps.
May 18: Canadian Championship – Empire Field – Vancouver, BC
Whitecaps FC and Toronto FC played to a 1-1 draw at Empire Field in the first leg of the 2011 Canadian Championship final. Hassli scored for the ‘Caps, while former TFC striker Maicon Santos (now with Chicago Fire) had the goal for the Reds.
June 29: MLS regular season – BMO Field – Toronto, ON
In their second ever MLS match against Toronto FC, Whitecaps FC lost a 1-0 decision in Toronto. The lone goal for the Reds was scored by Nick Soolsma, who has since returned to the Netherlands.
July 2: Canadian Championship – BMO Field – Toronto, ON
The 'Caps again looked to be well on their way to winning the Canadian Championship when they led TFC 1-0 after 60 minutes in the second leg of the final on May 26. However, stormy weather and heavy rain caused the match to suspended and replayed in full on July 2.
In the rescheduled second leg of the 2011 Canadian Championship final, a re-ignited Toronto team defeated Whitecaps FC by a score of 2-1. The 'Caps goal was scored on a beautiful free kick by Camilo, while Toronto FC’s goals were scored by Joao Plata and Mikael Yourassowsky.
2012:
March 3: Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic – ESPN Wide World of Sports – Orlando, FL
In the midst of an impressive preseason under first year MLS head coach Martin Rennie, the Blue and White defeated Toronto by a score of 1-0 and to earn the 2012 Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic title. Camilo had the goal for the 'Caps 10 minutes in and the ‘Caps were able to take the cup.
May 16: Canadian Championship – BC Place – Vancouver, BC
In an exciting first leg of the 2012 Canadian Championship final, the 'Caps and Reds played to a 1-1 draw. Hassli had the goal for the ‘Caps - a last-minute stunner nominated for FIFA Goal of the Year - while current Portland Timbers striker Ryan Johnson scored for Toronto FC.
May 23: Canadian Championship – BMO Field – Toronto, ON
The second leg of the 2012 Canadian Championship final proved to be another disappointing ending for Vancouver as Toronto FC defeated the ‘Caps 1-0 at BMO Field. Reggie Lambe scored the dagger for the home team to seal the Canadian Championship for the Reds.
July 11: MLS regular season – BMO Field – Toronto, ON
In their only meeting of the 2012 MLS regular season, the ‘Caps fell 3-2 to Toronto FC. Luis Silva, Dunfield, and Torsten Frings scored for the Reds, while Darren Mattocks scored both goals for the Blue and White - including a world-class display of athleticism on an incredible leaping header late in the match.
