This season Vancouver Whitecaps FC have partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society as the beneficiary of the club’s 50/50 program. A 50/50 draw takes place at every home match where fans have the opportunity to purchase tickets for their chance at 50 per cent of the pot.
On Saturday, March 2, at the ‘Caps home opener at BC Place, there was more than one inspiring win that took place. Jean Biloddeau (pictured left) from Fort St. John won over $5,000 from the ‘Caps 50/50.
Jean is currently fighting his own battle with cancer. Prior to the match on March 2, he flew in for an appointment for cancer treatment in Vancouver. On Saturday morning, while sitting around the breakfast table, Jean and his family decided that they were already going to be in Vancouver, so why not buy tickets to watch Vancouver Whitecaps FC take on Toronto FC?
This ’Caps match was the first live professional soccer match Jean had ever attended. When a Canadian Cancer Society volunteer came by he didn’t hesitate to buy 50/50 tickets, and was even more grateful that he did when he heard that the proceeds were being donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.
“The kicker was that when my number was called I had just taken my coat off and was wearing my Toronto Maple Leafs jersey,” said Jean. “This is the jersey I used to wear to visit my brother who passed away from Leukemia last year. The society doesn’t have enough money to be able to fund all the research it needs and Whitecaps FC’s 50/50 program is a great way to help. Having won this prize and being a cancer patient myself is just a bonus.”
