Holders of the best record in Major League Soccer, FC Dallas put a long undefeated streak on the line when they play host to Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday evening in Frisco. FCD extended their unbeaten run to five matches last weekend, knocking off the previously undefeated LA Galaxy 1-0. Whitecaps FC head back on the road after coming back for a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake at BC Place last time out.

FC Dallas extended their undefeated run to five games in dramatic fashion, getting a late goal for a 1-0 win against the LA Galaxy on Saturday evening in Frisco. FCD sit atop the Western Conference with 16 points from 7 matches.
LAST MATCH
- The match took a decisive turn in the 60th minute when LA defender Leonardo was shown red for taking down FC Dallas forward Blas Pérez in the box. On the ensuing penalty, Galaxy goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini guessed correctly and saved Kenny Cooper’s attempt from the spot.
- The game's lone goal then came in the in the 87th minute. Eric Hassli’s header from a corner kick hit the crossbar, but defender George John raced in to nod the rebound into the goal from almost on the goal line for the match-winner.
- FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman made no changes to the team that reached a 2-2 draw with Toronto FC at BMO Field.

- FC Dallas extended their undefeated streak to five games with the win against the LA Galaxy. The undefeated streak is the longest for FCD since going nine games without defeat from April 23-June 4, 2011.
- “This is the best we’ve ever started out. You don’t start off a season with this type of record without having a fighting spirit. The team works hard for one another,” said FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman. “We have spent a lot of time on set pieces and free kicks, corner kicks, because we have the size. It’s one of those things that the team really likes one another. They are determined to find success.”
- While FC Dallas have allowed six goals in the final 15 minutes of the game – the most of any team in MLS – they have scored four goals in that time, including three game-winners.
- FC Dallas have also scored four goals from set-piece situations, tied with Columbus for most in the league.
- “It’s just belief. It just happens to be those minutes at the end of the game. Maybe at the end of the game, we are a little more hungry,” said Hyndman. “On corner kicks, we can get our big guys up into the box. There’s a lot of spring on our step, guys are going for the goal. Set pieces are another way we can punish teams. Tonight, we felt it. Once they went down a man it was only going to be one or three points.”
- Hyndman maintained his same starting team, meaning Kenny Cooper was again stationed in a wide role, opposite Jackson, with Blas Perez as the spearhead striker.
- “When you go on the flanks,” Hyndman said, “right now we have the potential of going with Fabián, Jackson and Kenny Cooper and I think we have the capability of doing a lot of good things there.” Said Jackson: “I think a lot of teams are very aware of the speed we have and they are starting to play their best players outside to put pressure on us. At the same time, I don’t see that as a negative because it does create opportunities for Jair Benítez and David Ferreira.”
- After not seeing the field for two consecutive matches, Eric Hässli came on for the final 24 minutes, his longest outing since joining FCD.
- “We know he’s a strong player. He’s a good goal scorer. He holds the ball up very well. He came in with an injury so we’ve been trying to get him to recover,” said Hyndman. “This was a good game to put him on because we knew we had the opportunity to play with two strikers, being up a man. I think he did fine.”
- It was the 13th time in MLS history that two or more penalty kicks were missed in the same game. The league record is three, which occurred in a Dallas-MetroStars game in 2003.
- “Two good saves by goalkeepers. You don’t normally see penalty kicks being saved, let alone two PKs being saved by both teams,” said Hyndman. “On ours, Raul [Fernandez] made a great save. He anticipated Landon [Donovan] going to his left and got an early jump on it and made a great save. That was the difference in the game.”
VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC
Vancouver Whitecaps FC returned home and played to a second consecutive draw, coming back for a 1-1 result with Real Salt Lake on Saturday afternoon at BC Place. Whitecaps FC sit in a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference with 8 points from 6 matches.
LAST MATCH
- Real Salt Lake took the lead in the 66th minute through a sensational goal from Olmes García. Collecting a pass from Javier Morales outside the area on the left, García curled an effort into the top right corner of Joe Cannon’s goal.
- But the equalizer came seven minutes from the end. RSL defender Nat Borchers slipped and handled a ball in the box, and referee Drew Fischer pointed to the spot. Camilo sent RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando the wrong way on the penalty, hitting the ball into the bottom left of the goal.
- Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie made one change to the team that came back for a 1-1 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium. Camilo Sanvezzo came back into the team in place of Erik Hurtado.

- Whitecaps FC were able to come back from a second-half deficit but still dropped points at home for the first time this season when Camilo Sanvezzo’s penalty kick ensured the draw with Real Salt Lake.
- “It’s been a good start of the season…we’ve done well in every game we’ve played. When I look at last season, I think now we’ve got more points or at least as many points as we did last point this season,” said head coach Martin Rennie. “Last season was the best start ever and everybody was over the top excited as to how good the start was last season. This season is the same, we are slightly better, but we’ve not really been clicking yet.”
- While Whitecaps FC have scored seven goals in their six matches, sitting right in the middle of the league, they have yet to be shut out on the attacking end, one of seven teams to have scored in every game this season.
- “Ultimately it takes players to [finish],” Rennie said. “The last little part of the game is down to players putting the ball in the back of the net. Those who do that become very rich, and very wealthy, and very famous. It’s up to players to become that and ultimately, that’s what it comes down to. The ball can bounce off you sometimes, you can get lucky sometimes, but to be a consistently good goalscorer you can become a very wealthy young man, and it’s up to our players to become that if that’s what they’ve got the hunger and desire to do and the work rate to do.”
- After moving to the substitutes’ bench for the San Jose match, Camilo Sanvezzo returned to the first XI in a wide attacking role, his second start of the 2013 season.
- “I have a couple of chances and I need to score,” Camilo said. “But I continued on the game and keep focused. I listen to what the coach said before the game – ‘be focused on the next game, be focused on the next ball, be focused on the next ball,’ and the next ball I’ll try to put in the net.”
- Corey Hertzog remained in the starting lineup for a second consecutive start, with Darren Mattocks coming on his place for the final 27 minutes.
- Russell Teibert also continued in a central midfield role, making his second consecutive start, his second of the season.
- “I think Russell is coming on really well. I think with our young players, we put them in the best opportunity to succeed, we don’t throw them in before they are ready. We feel they are ready and we want to give them a chance,” said Rennie. “Russell performed very well today, he covered a lot of ground, he marked out well against the defenders, and he also broke forward, his touch was good, his pass was excellent.”
