VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC didn’t make it easy for themselves on Saturday in their 4-3 win over the 10-man New England Revolution, but were resolute in their task to overcome an early two-goal deficit.
“The first 20 minutes, we probably never got started the way we would have liked,” striker Kenny Miller said following the match. “But obviously with the penalty and the sending off it gives you that boost to go on and get goals.”
But once they did score four consecutive goals, the ‘Caps allowed a goal from Dimitry Imbongo and gave the Revs a window back into the match.
“I have no idea,” Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie responded when asked about the club’s difficulty in holding onto leads. “It can’t be good for my health, watching these games…right now we just seem to be doing things the hard way.
“But right now we are winning, we’re moving forward and hopefully we’ll get to the point where things are done a little more easily.”
While there were plenty of questions in the back throughout the match, in the final third there was little doubt about Miller’s contribution. The Scotsman continued his remarkable form this season, scoring a brace and generating a penalty which Camilo scored, and his play to earn the PK call also meant the dismissal of Andrew Farrell.
Miller’s goals were both high-caliber efforts – first in the 39th minute when he chipped Steve McCarthy before hitting home a smart left-footed effort, and once again in the 68th minute, as he scored an even better one by unleashing a shot into the upper 90 of Bobby Shuttleworth’s goal.
“It was hard work and we made it tougher than it probably should have been toward the end,” Miller said. “But we’ve got to take the positives. It’s three points, it’s four goals at home.”
