The Canadian Soccer Association announced on Thursday that five Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency players have been named to the 24-player roster for an upcoming U-17 Canadian national team training camp in Sunrise, Florida. The camp will run from August 2 to 12 as the team continues its preparations for the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup to take place in the United Arab Emirates in October and November.
Included on the roster are goalkeeper Marco Carducci, defender Alex Comsia, and midfielders Marco Bustos, Matthew Chow, and Jordan Haynes. All five players were part of the successful Canadian team that came through CONCACAF qualification in Panama this past April. Carducci was captain during the tournament.
Comsia and Chow are both former members of the BC Soccer Provincial Development Program and the National Training Centre, while Chow is an alumni of the EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League with Fusion FC.
Head Coach Sean Fleming has also invited five players that were not part of the team’s medal-winning campaign in Panama into the camp as he looks to ensure that Canada takes the strongest squad possible to its second consecutive U-17 World Cup.
“This camp is a great opportunity for the players who are already in the team to show that they deserve to keep their places – and it is also a great chance for the new players to stake their claim to being part of this team heading towards the FIFA U-17 World Cup,” said Fleming. “We are definitely looking to create competition for spots on this team. That is important to us."
The Canadian U-17 team will take part in a three-match exhibition schedule against local academy teams during the camp in Florida.
Following the August training camp the team will also gather for time together in Mexico in September and a pre-tournament camp in UAE in October.
