VANCOUVER, BC – When Vancouver Whitecaps FC host Chivas USA this weekend at BC Place, they should have their MLS all-time leading goalscorer back in the lineup.
After sitting out Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to LA Galaxy with a tight groin – the first time he hasn’t seen any minutes since Vancouver’s March 2 season opener – Camilo participated in light training Tuesday morning at UBC’s Dhillon Field. He also did some one-on-one work with club physiotherapist Graeme Poole.
Head coach Martin Rennie said he expects the Brazilian striker will be available for selection Sunday against the Goats.
“It was disappointing not to have him on Saturday but we should have him back this weekend, which I think is a really important factor,” Rennie told reporters Tuesday after training.
It was a smaller-than-usual training session on Tuesday, as those who travelled to Seattle for Whitecaps FC’s Reserves match on Monday evening were given the day off.
Striker Tommy Heinemann, who has been a force for the ‘Caps reserves this season, was not involved in Monday’s contest. The 26-year-old forward is nursing a sore left knee and was at training on Tuesday working with Poole. Injured centre back Brad Rusin also did some light jogging along the sidelines, as he continues to recover from a sprained right ankle.

Meanwhile, Tuesday signalled the end of Canadian midfielder/striker Brett Levis’ week-long trial with the club. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native played 36 minutes for the ‘Caps reserves on Monday in Seattle. After spending the summer with Victoria Highlanders FC, Levis will now re-join the University of Saskatchewan Huskies for the upcoming Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) season.
“We’ll keep an eye on him,” said Rennie. “He did well when he was here and he’s gone back to playing college now. We’ll get a good chance to monitor him but he certainly did well and we liked what we saw.”
Three Vancouver Canucks players also made an appearance at UBC’s Dhillon Field on Tuesday. Centre Henrik Sedin, defenceman Alex Edler, and goaltender Eddie Lack spent parts of the session running laps along the track, as they continue preparations for the start of the National Hockey League season.
